Art and Photography

The Art department at Brooke Weston is a lively and visually stimulating environment where students are encouraged to be at their imaginative and skilful best.

Our team of three dedicated Art teachers and a technician deliver a curriculum which covers the whole range of artistic activity from painting and drawing to three dimensional construction, ceramics, digital and traditional photography and even touches on animation.  In addition to our painting, photographic dark room, potters’ wheels, and kilns, our department boasts more than four dozen computers equipped with professional quality Art and Photography software, including Photoshop.

We are very proud of the impressive results our students achieve at GCSE and A Level; the subject is a popular option and students from our Art courses have gone on to pursue careers in Architecture, Illustration, Fashion Design, Photography, Computer-Aided Design and Fine Art among many other Art-related vocations.  These accomplishments are founded upon a wide-ranging and exciting curriculum which begins in Year 7 and progressively provides students with all the skills and techniques they need to succeed at GCSE and A Level.

Art Intent

As an Art Department, Art is a vital and integral part of a student’s education. Art provides them with opportunities to develop a range of ways in which they can share and simulate their individual creativity and imagination whilst learning about and making links with a wide range of different types of art in our society. It enables students to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of the elements of art. We want to inspire and build creativity within our students to give them the skills and knowledge to develop a passion and understanding of areas in Fine art, Photography and Three dimensional design. Students learn to make informed judgements also aesthetic and practical decisions. They explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists and designers combined with practical skills to allow creative thinking, developing valuable and transferrable skills for future careers and life. The art curriculum will develop students’ understanding of the roles and functions of art and how it is shaped the history of art in different times and cultures. Students will develop their understanding of the visual language of art with effective teaching and carefully thought out sequences of lessons and experiences. We inspire to foster independence and confidence in the subject to allow our students to enjoy expressing their ideas by exploring a variety of media, techniques and processes over their studies in Art.
