BW students triumph in chemistry competition

A group of four students competed in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Top of the Bench competition and succeeded in making it through to the regional finals where they represented Northamptonshire coming eighth place out of fourteen regions.

The team, Year 11 student Dom Cusk, Year 10 student Matthew Brown and Year 9 students Molayo Olugbile and Josh Smith won their regional heats at the university of Northampton in November. They had to sit a test working as a team, which comprised of GCSE and real world applications of chemistry and was a huge challenge, but they succeeded in making it through to the East Midlands Regional final representing Northamptonshire.

Year 11 student Rajan Khunti replaced Dom Cusk in the finals and together they sat a two part exam and undertook a practical challenge to save the millennium falcon from overheating.

The team did fantastically well in the practical challenge coming second and eighth overall out of the 14 regions that competed.

Head of chemistry Mrs Louise Hull said, ‘I am so proud of how our boys performed in this competition. The tasks were extremely challenging both at the heats and the final but all the boys rose to the challenge and had fun with it, which was fantastic to see. Chemistry is such an interesting and diverse subject, to be able to compete at this level alongside other schools is an excellent opportunity to show how amazing our students really are!’
