Students set up a new weekly reading group
Year 8 students Emily Starkey and Lacey Johnston have set up a Book Club for our keen readers in Year 7. The club was created in Term 2 with its members meeting once a week during tutor time, to read and share their thoughts on what they have read. They are currently reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio, which follows ten-year old Auggie; who was born with a severe facial deformity, as he experiences more than the usual ups-and-downs of friendships, family and school.
Club member, Aaron Angell, said, ‘I love reading and especially reading for pleasure. What is great about the Book Club is we have a wide variety of books to choose from, and the group takes a vote on which book we would all like to read.’
Club leader Emily said, ‘We set the book club up because myself and Lacey both like books, and we wanted to share that joy with others. It is open to just year 7 at the moment because we wanted a club just for them to help them settle in. We give them a book and ask them to read a certain number of chapters, and then we talk about what happened in those chapters the following week. We love running the book club because it is amazing to see all of these amazing young people enjoy reading.'
