BWA Teacher Goes the Extra Mile Fundraising for Prostate Cancer UK

In a bid to raise vital funds for Prostate Cancer UK, Brooke Weston Academy PE teacher, Ryan Walsh, has taken up the challenge to run 5K every day in November. Prostate Cancer UK is a registered charity that has one simple ambition – to stop men dying from prostate cancer by shifting the science over the next ten years to focus on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and support. The money raised will fund research for life-saving treatments and provide practical support to men and their families affected by prostate cancer.

Ryan said, ‘I am running 5K every day in November, that’s 150K in 30 days, to help raise awareness and funding for Prostate Cancer UK. The reason I got involved in the fundraising is because prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. More than 47,500 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year – that's 130 men every day and 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Linking these statistics to our Academy, unfortunately means that out of the 619 male students, 77 of them could experience and be diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in their lifetime.’

Ryan is completing his 5K runs at the end of the school day and said, ’The running is going well so far and the amazing PE team at Brooke Weston have been joining me during the week to ensure I get the 5K in daily. I am currently 40% of the way to my fundraising target of £1000!’

Thank you to everyone who has already sponsored Ryan.  If you haven’t so far, but would like to donate, please use the link below: Ryan Walsh is fundraising for PROSTATE CANCER UK (justgiving.com)
