BWA students gain awards in national design competition

Well done to students from Brooke Weston Academy who have won gold, silver and bronze awards for their Design Technology submissions for a national design competition.

The Student Starpack Awards is a nationally recognised competition where students were asked to submit design solutions to problems set by leading companies, design agencies and manufacturers, including local businesses including RPC, Rigid Containers and Klockner.

This year the industry judges awarded 17 Gold, 17 Silver and 12 Bronze awards covering all categories and there were three students from Brooke Weston Academy who were awarded. These were Adam O’Brien who won gold for his ‘excellent design and concept supported by very comprehensive boards with great sketches and rendering.’

Dominick Taylor won silver for his ‘very clever way to make the pack adjustable that could be scaled for a lot of different products.’

Finally Molly Richardson was awarded bronze for her ‘great design that could be adapted to meet requirements for a range of deliveries.’

The trio will be invited to attend the Starpack Schools Award Ceremony online on Wednesday 24 June 2020, which is free for all entrants, tutors, family and friends to join and which recognise the hard work and effort that went into each entry.

Student Starpack is run by IOM, the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. It said: ‘The competition, established in 1964, challenges students from a wide range of courses … to submit solutions to problems set by brand-leading companies. The expectation is that students really challenge conventional thinking and break the rules with off-the-wall creativity and this is the key criterion for judging success.’ There was a range of design briefs to choose from and prizes for the final winning entries include cash and work experience placements.

Jonathan Browne, Assistant Principal and Head of Work Related Learning and Industry Relationships said: ‘This is a great result for our students, which shows that they are coming up with innovative and workable designs that can be utilised in industry. Well done to the seven who took part, which included Anju Jacob, John Schofield, Matthew Leer and Madeline Brack whose entries all attracted very positive comments, as well as the trio who picked up awards in this, Brooke Weston Academy’s first every submission in this award scheme. We are delighted for you all.’
