Medicine and Dentistry Insight Talk

Former students return to BWA to inspire future medics and dentists

Brooke Weston Academy had the pleasure of welcoming back two of its distinguished alumni, Rufus Mathew, and Aaron Rawlins, to provide current students with valuable insights into studying medicine and dentistry at university.

Both Rufus and Aaron graduated from BWA in 2022 after completing their A-Levels. Rufus is now a second-year dentistry student at King’s College, London, while Aaron is in his second year of studying medicine at Homerton College, University of Cambridge.

During their visit, Rufus and Aaron engaged with 50 students from Years 11 to 13, sharing their experiences and answering questions in a lively Q&A session.

Rufus said, ‘It’s really encouraging to see so many students expressing an interest in medicine and dentistry. They had some excellent questions about what it takes to make a successful application, and it is crucial that they look to gain relevant work experience to reflect upon when they reach the interview.’

Year 12 student Wendy Ako Tarh said, ‘Being able to ask questions of Aaron and Rufus confirmed for me that I am on the right path regarding my extracurricular activities and encouraged me to find additional work experience opportunities. They also advised me to conduct more research into the structure and content of medicine courses, as they can vary between universities and I need to identify those that would work best for me.’

Following the insight session, Rufus and Aaron conducted mock interviews for Year 13 students aspiring to enter the fields of medicine and dentistry. They provided detailed, personalised feedback, helping candidates prepare for various scenario-based questions.

Adrian Fernandez, Year 13 said, ‘It was very informative and really steered me in the right direction with my preparation for dentistry interviews.’

Post 16 Curriculum Coordinator Mrs Hegarty said, ‘It really was a joy to welcome Rufus and Aaron back to BWA. Hearing about their studies and adventures since leaving BWA is truly inspirational for our students and demonstrates that if you have a goal in focus, and are prepared to put the work in then it can pay off.

‘We would like to thank them both for giving up their time and dedication in advising and supporting the students of BWA, it is very much appreciated, and we look forward to working with them again in the future.’
