Royal Navy inspires Year 7 students with helicopter design challenge
Brooke Weston Academy was delighted to welcome visitors from the Royal Navy Outreach team to deliver a STEM related helicopter activity with our Year 7 cohort.
Year 7 students had the unique opportunity to engage with the Royal Navy during an exciting, hands-on activity that combined engineering, creativity, and teamwork. With guidance from Royal Navy personnel, Mark and Patrick, the students participated in a helicopter design challenge, which aimed to ignite curiosity and showcase the principles of aerodynamics and engineering in a fun and interactive way.
The task involved designing and constructing miniature helicopters using paper templates, scissors, tape, and paper clips. After crafting their models, students evaluated the performance of their helicopters by testing their flight capabilities from a height. The competition was not only thrilling but also educational, as students compared flight distances and stability, learning about the science behind successful designs.
As one Year 7 student said, ‘It was amazing to learn how helicopters work and to see our own designs take flight. The things we have learnt in science make sense.’
Careers Lead, Amber Colquhoun said, ‘The event was a fantastic way for students to learn about engineering principles while interacting with professionals who showcased the diverse career opportunities within the Royal Navy.
‘This collaboration is important to bring real-world experiences into education, inspiring the next generation of problem solvers and innovators. Thank you to Mark and Patrick for their time and delivering fun and informative sessions. The enthusiasm and innovative designs on display highlighted the success of the collaboration.’
