  Christmas Showcase success

  Hundreds of students took part in this year's annual Christmas Showcase. The concerts featured acts including instrumentals, short plays, choral and classical arrangements and dances. Performers included Year 7 choirs, the Orchestra, Year 13 BTEC group, lower and upper school dance groups as well as Year 10 drama students.

  Those who can teach

  Over the last 10 years training to become a teacher has been changing. Firstly, the routes available to become a teacher have altered significantly. Traditionally students went to university, completed a degree and went on to do a PGCE programme, (Postgraduate Certificate of Education) which involved placements at different schools. Now that’s changed as more innovative ways to bring teachers into the profession are needed. There are still the traditional routes available however now options such as School Direct are proving to be really successful methods of training, not only for the schools involved, but also for the trainees.

  National media interviews computer science teacher​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

  Computer science teacher Ray Chambers is being interviewed by national media about the imminent release of an educational version of Minecraft. The game, which allows users to construct virtual structures, is already popular with students, but the new release is specifically aimed at school use. Mr Chambers has been approached by The Sunday Times and TV show Good Morning Britain to talk about how the software can be used to enhance lessons.

  The telephone interview with the Sunday Times should appear in this weekend’s paper and Mr Chambers is due to be live on ITV some time between 06:30 and 08:30 on Tuesday morning.

  Diamond D of E success

  In celebration of the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme’s Diamond Anniversary DT technician Mr Darren Hooper has recently completed a 12 hour mountain bike race plus a separate cycling expedition up Mount Snowdon to raise funds for local D of E projects.

  Mr Hooper completed the gruelling 12 hours of mountain biking around Minley Manor in Reading, only stopping for one or two minutes every lap, and later went on to bike to the top of Mount Snowdon, raising £150. He said ‘I didn’t get the chance to do D of E when I was at school. So when I heard about the Diamond D of E challenge I knew it was something I wanted to do. I love challenging myself and pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone.

  Welcome to our School Direct trainees

  Welcome to the trainee teachers who are just starting their placements at Brooke Weston as part of the School Direct programme. The year-long course combines university study and school experience and successful candidates will be awarded a PGCE qualification next summer.

  The trainees, specialising in English, maths, science, French and history, are a mix of recent undergraduates and those who have had jobs in other sectors but who want a career change to teaching.

  Mr Chambers accredited as Microsoft Innovative Expert Educator

  IT Teacher Ray Chambers has been accredited as a Microsoft Innovative Expert Educator so he will network with other teachers in the area and share best practice.

  Microsoft said: ‘MIEs are educators that are using Microsoft tools in the classroom and have learned the fundamentals of some of these tools. This is the first step on a journey of joining a professional learning network of enthusiastic educators who come together to learn, share and grow.’

  End of an era as Mr Witt retires

  Brooke Weston was such a beacon of educational inspiration that Mr Gerry Witt travelled half way across the country to teach here for his entire 22 years in the profession. He targeted Brooke Weston after reading about its reputation for child-centered and innovative learning, long before such techniques became commonplace.

  Its push to drive educational standards and ambitions up, to the extent that a local child winning a place at university was no longer front page news, drew Mr Witt from the south coast to a county that he had knowledge of or links to. Over the years he has taken on many roles, including managing exams and latterly being Head of Sixth Form, guiding students in their choices of university and careers and ensuring that they make the best possible choices in higher education.

  Miss West leaves after nearly a quarter of a century

  One of our longest serving teachers has left after nearly 25 years at Brooke Weston. Lisa West has performed a huge number of roles since coming to work in the sports department in 1991.

  As well gaining her degree, she has taught in the PE, Science and Design Technology departments as well as delivering the BTEC Health and Social Care qualification. For the past three years she has been Brooke Weston’s SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator).
