Mathematics Department

At Brooke Weston Academy we firmly believe that everyone can be a Mathematician. We want to provide every student with the mathematical toolkit and confidence to enable them to thrive in the real world. At the most basic level, we aim to provide all of our students with the numeracy and reasoning skills that will, for example, enable them to get somewhere on time, to pay their bills and to effectively function within their future workplaces. We want to develop Mathematicians who can confidently access and fluently use mathematical concepts in any area of study, for example, the projection of profit margins, how to calculate the concentration of chemical compounds or how to make accurate inferences from a dataset. We want to develop students who act and talk like Mathematicians by asking probing questions, making predictions, testing their hypotheses, and developing arguments to explain their conclusions. Our ultimate aim is to expose our students to the real beauty of mathematics with its infinite possibilities and to develop Mathematicians who can ultimately go on to change the world.

Mathematics Intent

To achieve the above we deliver an ambitious, carefully sequenced, knowledge rich, coherent, forward-facing curriculum for all our students from Year 7 through to Year 13. We aim to create, in all our lessons, an environment that is entirely conducive to learning, through use of consistent, embedded routines and up-to-date, research-informed methods such as retrieval practice, interleaving and direct instruction. We believe that students should learn about and understand mathematical concepts rather than being taught algorithms and tricks to be learnt by rote. Our initial focus is to provide all our students with a firm foundation of mathematical skills and knowledge, upon which we then strive to build confident and capable mathematicians with not only these key skills, but also a strong grasp of the reasoning and problem-solving skills required to apply those skills in different contexts. We endeavour to provide our students with the support, and also the challenge, required to facilitate consistent improvement, through both effective, impactful lessons and homework that reinforces the learning taking place in school.

Enhancement Opportunities

The Maths department have an active calendar for trips, visits and challenges including:

  • OMEC and Maths Feast
  • Local inter-school competitions
  • Maths Challenges such as the UKMT across all year groups.

The department are pleased to welcome the Advanced Maths Support Programme to deliver problem solving courses for our A level students to support them with their STEP and MAT assessments.
