Students from Brooke Weston Academy who took part in the recent Brooke Weston Trust Yoto Carnegie and Kate Greenaway book shadowing event, watched the live streaming of the awards ceremony which was held at the British Library in London and hosted by award-winning poet and novelist Dean Atta.
The Carnegie Medal was awarded to Katya Balen for her second novel October, October which also won this year's Shadowers' Choice Award after thousands of young people shadowing the awards across the UK voted for it as their favourite.
The Kate Greenaway Medal was awarded to Danica Novgorodoff's illustrated edition of Jason Reynold's Long Way Down; the first win in 50 years for a graphic novel, while the winner of the Shadowers' Choice Award for the Kate Greenaway Medal was The Midnight Fair, illustrated by Mariachiara Di Giorgio.
Librarian, Wendy McCabe, said ‘It was fantastic that the students had the opportunity to see the official results being announced live and they were all eagerly waiting to see if the results matched their favourites. This year's shortlist has been outstanding and although the students didn’t predict the winners on the day, they were all worthy reads.’
