BWA staff and students get festive!

Staff and students at Brooke Weston Academy have been getting into the festive spirit with a variety of Christmas-themed activities taking place in the last few weeks of term two.

The senior leadership team assisted the restaurant staff with serving Christmas dinners to students and staff, dishing out hundreds of plates of festive fare. Brooke Weston Academy Christmas dinners are an integral part of the celebrations each year, with the restaurant staff always making every effort to impress by decorating the restaurant and producing high-quality food.

Year 10 students studying Food Technology took part in the Tunnock’s Teacake Challenge with a Christmas theme. This annual, national competition provides students an opportunity to practice and refine their food preparation and presentation skills by styling a plate using their own artistic creativity. Students learnt how to make a chocolate motif, experimented with moulding fondant icing, and used fresh berries to add a variety of garnishes. Chef of the Week was awarded to Eilish Smith, Jamie Woods, Sitha Niroj, and Lilly Rowlatt.

Congratulations to the winners of the recent ‘Five a Day’ competition. Students were invited to make Christmas crudité wreaths and Christmas trees to promote the use of fruit and vegetables and encourage others to eat their ‘five a day’. The winners were: 1st - Eunice Obiri, 2nd - Ruta Ambrasaite and Elizabete Krievane, 3rd - Maddison Thornton and Harry Roberts.

Some of our Year 7 and 8 students experienced the magic of pantomime with a special performance of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ at the Core at Corby Cube. This classic tale, which tells the story of a poor country boy who trades his family cow for magic beans, came to life on stage in a vibrant and engaging production. The trip not only provided entertainment but also offered a wonderful opportunity for students to experience live theatre and appreciate the performing arts.

Our student committee members organised a successful Winter Fayre with students able to purchase sweets and treats. There was also fun to be had with a tombola, face-painting and an opportunity for students to practice their hand-eye coordination with a variety of games, with all proceeds from the Winter Fayre being donated to the local Foodbank.

The BWA Charity, Wellbeing & Diversity Committee would like to thank our students, parents, carers and staff for your generosity and support during our recent food donation drive for the Corby Food Bank as it will make a difference to many in the local area over the festive period. The foodbanks of Corby provide a vital lifeline which have seen a recent 20% increase in use, supporting 3518 people in the local community.

Central to the Christmas festivities, in what has now become an annual event, staff and students were encouraged to wear a Christmas jumper on the last day of term and take part in a mufti day in return for a £1 donation to Corby Food Bank if they wished to do so.

We wish you all a safe and well-deserved break and look forward to welcoming all students back in the New Year on Wednesday 8th January.
