Former BWA student returns to inspire future STEM leaders
Brooke Weston Academy had the privilege of hosting an inspiring talk titled ‘Engineering the Life of Your Dreams’ by former student Emily Brown, an exceptional alumna of BWA. Emily, who graduated in 2020, recently achieved first-class honours in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, ranking third in her cohort. She is now pursuing an MPhil in Biological Sciences at Cambridge and is also the co-founder of STEMspire, a tutoring company with a mission to empower students from all backgrounds to pursue STEM careers.
Emily’s talk was both insightful and motivating. She shared her journey, highlighting the challenges and triumphs that shaped her path. Her emphasis on the importance of STEM careers and breaking down barriers in the field resonated deeply with our students. Emily’s ability to connect with the audience and present her story in a relatable and inspiring way was remarkable.
Feedback from staff and students alike has been overwhelmingly positive. Teachers who had the privilege of teaching Emily spoke of their pride in seeing her accomplishments and the positive impact she had made.
Bruno Slezak (Y13) said, ‘The talk was insightful and outlined key aspects of applying to STEM courses at university and working in STEM fields. Emily answered the questions I asked with great proficiency and left me with an increased knowledge of such processes.’
Yiannis Papachristoforou (Y13) said, ‘I found the talk quite exhaustive in regard to the concepts explored surrounding the ‘university experience’ and Emily’s ability to use her personal experience so astutely in forming her business STEMspire has inspired me further concerning my future studies and career.’
Mr Gareth Van Wyk, Engineering Lead, said ‘Emily has not only left a mark in the classrooms where she once studied but also throughout the corridors of our school. Her words have undoubtedly encouraged many students to explore new possibilities within STEM and beyond. It’s always a privilege to host an alumna who embodies excellence and represents the values of Brooke Weston Academy. Emily is truly “one of our own,” and we are incredibly proud of her achievements. We look forward to seeing the continued impact of her work and are confident that her story will inspire future generations of Brooke Weston students.’
