BWA’s Inaugural Reading Week: A Celebration of Literacy
Brooke Weston Academy proudly hosted its very first ‘Reading Week’ in Term 2, an event designed to foster a love for reading and enhance literacy skills across the school. Each department selected texts, both fiction and non-fiction, that align with their curriculum, encouraging students to read and discuss these works together. This initiative aimed to build confidence in reading and promote the sharing of ideas.
Reading for just 20 minutes a day accumulates to 3,600 minutes in a school year, equating to an impressive 1,800,000 words read annually. At BWA, we refer to this journey as our students’ ‘reading miles.’ By dedicating 20 minutes each day to reading, students cover significant reading miles, enriching their vocabulary and comprehension skills.
During Reading Week, each student read over 2,500 additional words, honing essential skills such as summarising, predicting, and questioning. These skills are crucial for understanding and interpreting the world around them. The week also featured book recommendations from both staff and students, promoting our love of reading and the power of a good book!
Literacy Coordinator Lauren Fitzjohn said, ‘Reading Week has been introduced to BWA to provide additional opportunities for curriculums to embrace the written word and the power and knowledge that comes with reading. We have exposed our students to thousands of new words and hopefully inspired new areas of interest whilst building on cultural capital.
'Staff are passionate about their subjects and through their leading of the tasks, in addition to their book recommendations, we hope to have sparked a love of reading and gaining knowledge in our students.
Many thanks for the continued support from home in building those ‘reading miles’ as a vital addition to their school curriculum.’
