Year 12 students learn vital life-saving skills at BWA
Brooke Weston Academy recently had the pleasure of welcoming back former student Mercedes Britton, and Melissa Sturgess, both dedicated volunteers with the North Northants Community First Responders (NNCFR). Their visit was aimed at equipping our Year 12 students with essential life-saving skills.
The North Northants Community First Responders (CFRs) play a crucial role in supporting communities across Corby, Kettering, and the surrounding villages. These trained volunteers can perform a variety of emergency procedures, including emergency first aid, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), defibrillation, and oxygen therapy.
During the visit, students participated in a 45-minute basic first aid training session. The comprehensive session covered how to handle seizures, asthma attacks, and panic attacks, as well as the best practices for treating cuts and burns. The interactive nature of the training allowed students to engage actively, learning to recognise the signs and symptoms of medical emergencies.
A highlight of the session was the practical demonstration of using a defibrillator and performing CPR. Students had the opportunity to practice their CPR skills on a manikin, ensuring they are prepared to act confidently in real-life situations.
Post 16 Curriculum Coordinator Mrs Hegarty said, ‘This invaluable training not only enhances the students' knowledge and skills but also fosters a sense of community responsibility and readiness to assist in emergencies. Brooke Weston Academy is proud to provide such opportunities, reinforcing the importance of life-saving skills in everyday life.’
