Students watch the live-streamed ceremony announcing this year’s winners

Students from Brooke Weston Academy, who took part in the Brooke Weston Trust Carnegie book-shadowing event, watched the live-streaming of the awards ceremony, which was held at the Barbican Centre in London and hosted by award-winning artist and writer Lauren Child.

The Carnegie Medal for Writing was awarded to Manon Steffan Ros for ‘The Blue Book of Nebo’, a post-apocalyptic novel set in rural Wales following a nuclear disaster, with warmth and humanity at its core.

Jeet Zdung won the Carnegie Medal for Illustration for ‘Saving Sorya: Chang and the Sun Bear’ written and inspired by the real life of Vietnamese wildlife conservationist Dr Trang Nguyen.

Students who have been shadowing the awards in the UK and around the world also voted for their favourites from this year’s shortlist. They chose ‘I Must Betray You’ by Ruta Sepetys, a young adult novel set during the Romanian Revolution, for the Shadowers’ Choice Medal for Writing.

The Shadowers' Choice Medal for Illustration went to ‘The Comet’ by Joe Todd-Stanton, a touching picture book about a father and daughter who move from the country to the city and are searching for a feeling of home.

Librarian, Wendy Mann, said ‘It was fantastic that the students had the opportunity to see the official results being announced live, and they were all eagerly waiting to see if the results matched their favourites. This year's shortlist has been outstanding, and they are all worthy reads.’
